Dear Stacey,

I know life seems hard at this age. Growing up is big business. It feels like you don’t fit in like you’re constantly going against the grain, but don’t you worry. Your unique spirit will carry you far in this life. Don’t waste your time and energy conforming because it’s just not who you are. People will not always get you, but there will be so many that not only get you but who will respect your views and seek your wisdom.

People you love will say things that will hurt you, some things that you will carry with you for a very long time. They don’t mean what they say. Your confidence and energy frighten them. They don’t know how to receive your gifts – yet. Those same people will eventually look to you for advice and guidance in their lives. They will need you in ways that you cannot possibly imagine at this age. You’re not a freak. You’re a sage who’s older than her years. Believe that.

This body image thing will change too. Yes, you are buxom, and no boys your age cannot appreciate that, but you’re beautiful(inside and out). Believe it or not, you will grow comfortable in your skin. Even 20 years from now, you will not be thin, but the great news is you won’t be huge either – you’ll be just right.

Your smile is gorgeous, do it more often. That smile will welcome people into your space so that you can share your light. And contrary to popular belief, holding your head high doesn’t mean that you’re stuck-up. It means you’re sure of yourself —and you are.

You are going to try many things trying to figure out where you fit in, sometimes it will feel like you can’t commit to anything, but that’s not true. You cannot function when you’re not living your truth. But the experiences you collect along the way will be helpful when you finally arrive.

You talk a lot, you always have, but this is your gift. Choose your words wisely. Stop being so sarcastic. You don’t have to defend yourself from everyone. Your voice will ignite sparks, transform lives, and inspire the masses.

Life is imperfect. You’re going to suffer a lot, but it’s all worth it. You will go far. Just be yourself, and you’ll see.

xoxo,

39-year-old You
